The future of Sweden`s nuclear power program
This article discusses the present and future state of the Swedish nuclear industry. Since the national referendum in 1980 that called for the phaseout of nuclear power by 2010, vigorous efforts have been made to develope alternate energy sources that are as environmentally neutral; economically viable; and as safe, if not safer. So far, nuclear generation is the only energy source that meets Sweden`s economic and environmental criteria. The financial impact of the proposed phaseout is discussed and noted to be quite substantial. In the light of this, the Swedish government has overturned the 1995 start date for the phaseout, and the nuclear industry has made considerable efforts to improve the safety and performance of their plants.
