Recent developments: Sweden
The Swedish government introduced a new energy bill to its Parliament on March 2, 1988, scheduling the first two nuclear reactor shutdowns. This action represents the first substantial shutdown plan following Sweden`s 1980 referendum vote to phase out its twelve nuclear power plants by 2010. The bill calls for the permanent closure of one of the Barseback units and one of the Ringhals units in 1995 and 1996. While the legislation is expected to be passed by Parliament in May or June without any major revisions, certain vague provisions concerning shutdown costs and energy replacement may be clarified as it is debated. Although the actual reactors to be shut down will not be determined until 1990, the Barseback and Ringhals stations were selected because of their proximity to highly populated areas.
