New studies reignite the debate on the cancer risks of power lines. Among the most controversial and difficult potential health risks in the annals of environmental epidemiology has been the issue of electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Scientists, environmentalists, utilities, and government agencies have been debating the issue for more than twenty years now. More recently, consumers have joined the fray. At the center of this debate are the electric and magnetic fields generated by electric currents, which are present, in varying magnitudes and at different times, in virtually every home and office in the industrialized world. Two recent Swedish studies show the strongest link yet between EMF exposure and cancer. This article looks at the arguments and evidence on both sides and the suggestion of EMF regulation by the Government. 2 tabs.
