The 1995 changes to Louisiana`s NORM regulations expand the program to increase regulatory coverage in some areas, but refine it to account for technological and economic realities in others. The new regulations relax the equipment exemption level and instrument calibration requirements, clarify both waste and land exemption criteria, define different general licenses for production fields and certain pipeyards, and increase disposal options. A companion volume to the regulation, produced by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, Office of Air Quality and Radiation Protection, Radiation Protection Division, has been modified to reflect the latest changes. This handbook, titled {open_quotes}Implementation Manual for Management of NORM in Louisiana{close_quotes}, includes information useful to licensees and personnel performing screening surveys. Sampling protocols, contents of an acceptable NORM waste management program, and Division expectations that, must be satisfied before release from a general license are some of the topics that the Manual covers in more depth than the regulations.
