Evaluation of thermal sprayed coating by ultrasonic method

Thermal sprayed coating are sometimes applied to offshore structures as a surface treatment for corrosion resistance. The effect of the coating on corrosion resistance depends on the material used and mechanical properties of the coating, such as adhesion of coating to the substrate. Generally the properties of the coating is controlled by selecting operational conditions of thermal spraying. However, the sound coating is not always obtained by the optimum spraying condition and sometimes delamination of coating from the substrate occurs. Accordingly, if a nondestructive method to evaluate the coating can be developed, it will be useful for increasing reliability of the coating of the products. Therefore, the authors tried to develop a method to detect non-destructively the delamination of coating using ultrasonic testing method. In this paper, a coating model made by acrylic plates is assembled and the detection accuracy of the delamination is confirmed using the ultrasonic testing method. Furthermore, ceramic coatings made by plasma spraying method are subjected to thermal shock test and delaminating process of the coating is observed by the method. As the result of the investigation, it is made clear that the ultrasonic testing method developed are able to apply to detection of delamination of thermal sprayed coating.
