  1. Membranes Applications Engineering Environmental Technologies, Amherst, MA (United States)

The three main membrane types for liquid separation are reverse osmosis (RO), ultrafiltration (UF), and microfiltration (MF). The value of the current industrial investment in membrane processes is substantial, estimated in excess of $600 million in membranes (plus $3 billion in associated equipment) per year. This investment will only increase in coming years as future applications come on line. The performance of membrane processes is severely affected by fouling. The rate of fouling, therefore, is a crucial consideration in the design of membrane process plants. Here the author reviews the development of fouling-resistant membranes and modules for maintaining high flus and performance over extended periods. He discusses a variety of membrane technologies, including advanced design membrane modules, polymer modifications, new membrane types, rejection-enhanced filtration systems, and electrofiltration.
