What, when, and why of membranes MF, UF, and RO

Journal Article · · AIChE Symp. Ser.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5903811
A review covers the definitions of microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), and reverse osmosis (RO); membrane retention characteristics; membrane structure and production; concentration polarization; polarization control with prefiltration, with backwashing, and with cross flow; applications of the membrane processes, e.g., in pollution abatement; and their costs (none less than $0.20/1000 gal), which indicate that the present state of the technology will not allow the membrane processes to compete with conventional waste treatment processes unless there is a valuable by-product which can be recovered. Tables, graphs, photomicrographs, diagrams, photographs, and 42 references.
