A third-order random wave model has been developed. Analytic expressions are obtained for the third-order transfer functions for wave elevation and velocity potential. Wave kinematics above the mean water level is obtained by Taylor expansion. Time histories of the random wave elevation, velocity and acceleration are expressed in terms of single, double and triple Fourier integrals which are evaluated using FFT. Special attention is given to an efficient evaluation of the third-order components and to the selection of an appropriate cut-off frequency. Comparisons between third-order wave kinematics and Wheeler stretching kinematics are presented. Velocity and acceleration profiles are presented for some extreme wave conditions. The third-order wave components give only a minor contribution to the extreme crest elevation, but it is shown that there are important contributions at the front and/or back of extreme waves.
