Experimental wave elevation records from an array of wave probes in an irregular, longcrested laboratory wave field are compared to estimates from a second-order numerical wave model. The spatial dispersion of large and steep random individual waves is emphasized. For the numerical wave model, which is based on a linear (free) component to which a bound second-order non-linear component is added, linear dispersion is applied on the free components. The non-linear part propagates bound to this. The results from the comparison show that over a range corresponding to about 100m full scale, the model works well for moderately steep waves. For the most extreme and steep waves, some deviation is observed, although the main non-linear spatial development properties are reasonably well predicted. Thus the measured non-linear component seems to be partly coupled to the extreme crest phase velocity, while the numerical second-order component is more connected to the group velocity of the whole wave group. A non-linear wave dispersion model may be needed for improved prediction of extreme wave propagation.
