Search for multiphonon vibrational states in the {sup 137}Hf nucleus

The existence of multiphonon vibrational states in deformed nuclei has recently been a topic of great interest and controversy. A systematic study of vibrational states in the deformed rare-earth region showed that the {sup 178}Hf nucleus has one of the lowest energy ratios for the excitation energies of the K=4{sup +} and the K=2{sup +} bandheads. In order to determine the nature of the low-lying positive parity bands in this nucleus. we have studied {sup 178}Hf by {gamma}-ray spectroscopy via the ({alpha}, 2n) reaction. The beam energy was 26 MeV, the target was a self-supporting foil of enriched {sup 178}Yb. The experiment was carried out at the FSU Nuclear Laboratory using the combined arrays of suppressed Ge detectors (10) of the University of Pittsburgh and FSU. The data will be presented and compared with the collective model.
