Dynamics of compression and expansion in Au on Au collisions at the AGS

Recent results of the E877-collaboration{close_quote} from measurements of Au+Au collisions around 11 A-GeV/c will be put in perspective to previous results obtained with lighter Si-beams. Special emphasis will be put on three particular aspects of the analysis in order to gain insight into the dynamics of compression and expansion in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. For very central collisions the question of nuclear stopping achieved will be addressed through the comparison of rapidity distributions of nucleons and produced particles in the respective reactions. A picture of the freeze-out scenario emerges through the analysis of correlation functions of pions and protons. Additional information is obtained from the comparison of measured particle ratios with predictions from a thermal model. Finally, collective motion of particles will be addressed. Results from the analysis of transverse momentum spectra for different particles in very central collisions will be presented. For semi-central collisions it will be shown how the reaction plane can be reconstructed along with an analysis of the triple differential cross sections of nucleons and produced particles.
