Polarization of charmonium in {pi}{ital N} collisions
- Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, Stanford University, Stanford, California 94309 (United States)
Measurements of the polarization of {ital J}/{psi} produced in pion-nucleus collisions are in disagreement with leading twist QCD prediction where {ital J}/{psi} is observed to have negligible polarization whereas theory predicts substantial polarization. We argue that this discrepancy cannot be due to poorly known structure functions nor the relative production rates of {ital J}/{psi} and {chi}{sub {ital J}}. The disagreement between theory and experiment suggests important higher twist corrections, as has earlier been surmised from the anomalous non-factorized nuclear {ital A}-dependence of the {ital J}/{psi} cross section. {copyright} {ital 1995 American Institute of Physics.}
