Imatran Voima Oy with its subsidiary International Ltd. is developing an advanced fuel drying technology for high moisture content fuels as peat, biomass and brown coal. The technology, which is called the bed mixing dryer, is suitable for power plants utilizing fluidized bed combustion for combined heat and power generation (CHP) or solely power generation. The dryer uses the heat of the fluidized bed directly for drying in a vessel operated at steam atmosphere. The use of steam atmosphere makes it possible to recover the latent heat of evaporation to process which increases the thermal efficiency and economy of the power plant. This paper describes the bed mixing drying technology and its first application at the Imatran Voima`s Kuusamo power plant, which uses peat and wood wastes as fuels.
