Experimental investigations on brown coal drying in a pressurized steam fluidized bed
The development of new power plants based on brown coal, which has a raw moisture of up to 60 wt%, aims at a further improvement of the plant efficiency. The use of steam fluidized bed technique for a separate brown coal drying step is a promising possibility to reach this goal. The paper reports actual experimental results of parameter variations like pressure and particle size in a steam fluidized bed test dryer. For the used particle fractions, the particle convective mechanism is the leading factor for the overall heat transfer in steam fluidized bed drying of brown coal. An increase of pressure only enhances the negligible gas convective mechanism. Particle size reduction seems to be a promising measure to increase the overall heat transfer coefficient significantly.
