The Power Systems Development Facility (PSDF) at Wilsonville, Alabama, is a Department of Energy/Industry cost-shared test facility managed and operated by Southern Company Services (SCS). The test facility provides long-term hot gas cleanup and process testing of Advanced Pressurized Fluidized Bed Combustion (APFBC), advanced gasification and fuel cells. The APFBC ``module`` uses the Foster Wheeler Second-Generation PFBC process which incorporates carbonization of coal with circulating fluidized bed combustion. The 7-MW cost-shared APFBC plant, designed by Foster Wheeler and Southern Company Services, provides parametric and long-term process testing of the advanced PFBC cycle with emphasis on testing advanced high-temperature, high-pressure gas cleanup systems. While emulating commercial design and operation, the Wilsonville PSDF requires special design considerations because of its size. This paper enumerates the unique design considerations, their rationale, and effect on plant operation.
