Doping of diamagnetic II-VI crystals by magnetic elements with an unfilled d(f) shell results in a number of new phenomena in comparison with conventional semiconductors. The reasons are the exchange interaction of charge carriers with electrons of the unfilled shell of magnetic ions (sp-d exchange) and the Heisenberg interaction (d-d exchange) between magnetic ions. Studies of the Faraday effect in these crystals are of great physical interest in gaining deeper insight into the nature of exchange interaction and in providing necessary information for the practical application of these materials. The Cd{sub 1-x}Mn{sub x}Te system has now been comprehensively studied, while data on HgTe-based semiconductors are scarce. To our knowledge, the Faraday effect in Hg{sub 1-x}MnTe has been studied only for a few compositions. In this work, we report on the spectral and temperature dependences of Faraday rotation in Hg{sub 1-x}Mn{sub x}Te semiconductor crystals.
