Information technology: IOUs invest heavily in telecommunications technology

Electric utilities collectively own one of the largest communications sytems in the nation. Much of the backbone of those systems consists of fiber-optic cable, which can carry a huge amount of voice, video and data. In many instances, these companies` excess capacity can be marketed in a number of ways. This paper is a listing of a number of investor-owned utilities and their individual projects in the telecommunication field.
