The authors have completed the assembly of a High Energy Gamma-Ray Spectrometer system for use in radiative capture studies at LLNL. The main detector is a 10 inch diameter by 12 inches long NaI(Tl) crystal. The energy resolution of the detector is 2.5% at 6.13 MeV. The central detector is surrounded by a 4 inch-thick annulus plastic scintillator anti-coincidence detector. The detectors are shielded by 4 inches of Pb, 1 inch of B{sub 4}C loaded (70 weight % B) epoxy resin and 6 inches of borated (5 weight %) resin. The purpose of this shielding is to reduce the neutron induced backgrounds in neutron capture experiments. The detector assembly (6000 lbs) is mounted on air bearings so it can be rotated for angular distribution measurements. The characteristics of the detector will be presented.
