Lifetimes of oblate structures in {sup 121}I
- SUNY, Stony Brook, NY (United States); and others
Recoil-distance lifetime measurements have been conducted to explore lifetime delays expected from collective and non-collective oblate ({gamma} = {+-}60{degrees}) structures. The {sup 114}Cd({sup 11}B,4n{gamma}) reaction at 51 MeV, using beams provided by the Stony Brook FN Tandem, populated states in {sup 121}I. A stretched 0.5mg/cm{sup 2} {sup 114}Cd target foil was used with a {sup 208}Pb stopper precisely positioned at separations 20 to 5000{mu}m. The resulting {gamma}-rays were detected in a Ge-detector 7.5cm downstream. The mean lifetime of the 39/2{sup {minus}} ({gamma} = +60{degrees}) band terminating state is determined to be {tau} = 315(64)ps (4 W.u.). This transition rate is significantly reduced from the transitions within the collective prolate ({gamma} = {minus}60{degrees}) {pi}h{sub 11/2} band has a mean lifetime of 95(19)ps (2x10{sup {minus}5} W.u.). Both lifetimes reflect the small wavefunction overlap between the oblate states and those into which they decay.
