Polarized photon absorption by two and three nucleons in {sup 3}He

Journal Article · · Bulletin of the American Physical Society
OSTI ID:243523
The LEGS facility at BNL was used to measure cross sections and asymmetries for the reactions {sup 3}He({gamma},pp)n and {sup 3}He ({gamma},pn)p. Tagged, polarized photons of energies 190 {le} E{sub {gamma}} {le} 305 MeV were incident upon a liquid {sup 3}He target. Scattered protons were detected from 20{degrees} {le} {theta}{sub 1} {le} 160{degrees}. Coincident protons and neutrons were detected from 20{degrees} {le} {theta}{sub 2} {le} 140{degrees}. Cuts on the opening angles of the outgoing particles were used to separate two and three body absorption modes. The pn-3 body asymmetry is similar to the 2 body case, possibly indicating the effects of final state interactions. The pp-3 body and 2 body asymmetries differ markedly at forward angles.
