The addition of Pd(Ph{sub 3}P){sub 4} to the PdCl{sub 2}(Ph{sub 3}P){sub 2} catalyst reduces the rate of the catalytic hydrocarboxylation of styrene, propylene, and 1-heptene in spite of the increase in the concentration of Pd in the reaction mixture. With styrene the reaction also becomes more regioselective with respect to the linear product. The addition of Pd (Ph{sub 3}P){sub 4} is presumed to reduce the concentration of free HCl, which takes part in the catalytic process along with the Pd intermediates. 12 refs., 1 fig., 1 tab.
