EPA pollution program makes sense to industry, environmentalists

Chemical industry representatives and environmentalists can agree on some things. One in particular is EPA`s Common Sense Initiative (CSI), an industry-by-industry approach to evaluating environmental federal regulations rather than the current pollutant-by pollutant approach. Both groups call it a major step toward setting higher environmental protection standards. While the chemical industry was not one of the groups chosen to participate in a CSI pilot program, industry members say the initiative is a welcome change. The program has the potential to eliminate overlap of different environmental laws and fill in the gaps where no rules exist. The program is seen as an advance in making pollution prevention a standard business practice. When the program encompasses the chemical industry it will be especially helpful to small-batch manufacturers who are currently treated by the same regulations as larger companies. The EPA is finding it must tailor and tinker with the regulations to get the results they want.
