Control VOCs via catalytic oxidation

The hazardous organic National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP), or HON, addresses emissions from the synthetic organic chemical manufacturing industry and sets the tone for the maximum achievable control technology (MACT) standards that EPA is developing to regulate hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). Combustion devices are among the technologies companies can use to control emissions from process vents and storage vessels. According to the rule, enclosed combustion devices must reduce by 98% emissions from process vent streams or transfer racks with throughputs greater than 650,000 L/yr of liquids containing HAPs. One such combustion technology is catalytic oxidation. This article covers how catalytic oxidation works, typical catalysts, matching the catalyst characteristics to the requirements of the application, and catalyst deactivation and reactivation.
