This paper deals with lateral instabilities of pipelines resting on the sea bed caused by high temperatures and pressures. Due to the inherent axial strain potential being restrained by longitudinal soil friction forces at the ends, high compressive forces build up. Further, as a result of imperfections either induced by the fabrication and installation process, uneven seabed or external transverse loading, instability may occur as transverse displacements, releasing the inherent axial strains. This phenomenon is termed snaking. The study is motivated primarily by the needs for considering methods of controlling the bending moments and associated high strains resulting from this behavior. The paper examines alternative theoretical formulations and includes a case study focusing on the different parameters that influence the post-snaking behavior.
