The method of preventing upheaval buckling by means of the presnaking method is discussed. Using this method, a pre-calculated bend is forced in a pipeline at regular intervals while it is being installed on the seabed from a lay vessel. The bends reduce the axial stiffness and prevent large axial forces from occurring. In this way, upheaval buckling is prevented without the need for large quantities of rockdump. The method can be applied to carbon steel as well as to non-corrosive steels.
