The light weight and the excellent high temperature properties of gamma base titanium aluminides made them most suitable for structural applications provided their room temperature toughness and ductility are improved. As these materials are most suitable for applications in rotating turbine structures and other structural components, their fatigue and fracture characteristics must be understood for material development as well as structural designing. Fatigue crack growth behavior of gamma base titanium aluminides with different microstructures are under investigation by the authors. Some interesting results obtained during the course of research with lamellar microstructure materials are reported in this paper.
