Mechanism of disbonding of pipeline coatings. Final report, March 1, 1991-March 28, 1994

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:236916

The objective of this program has been to characterize the mechanism of cathodic disbonding of organic coatings from steel, to rationalize accelerated tests for cathodic disbonding resistance, and to develop strategies for inhibiting cathodic disbonding. The approach has been to use surface analytical tools of Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to characterize the surface chemistry of steel samples from the disbond zone after directly transferring them from the disbond environment to ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) for analysis. In addition, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to characterized the transport of corrodents and charge to the disbond front.
