The objective was to establish an improved basis for evaluating the cathodic disbondment of fusion bonded expoxy (FBE) coatings from cathodically protected gas delivery pipelines. Cathodic disbonding is the premature damage to coatings as a result of the cathodic protection of the coated steel pipeline. The coating disbonding, in turn, compromises the corrosion protection and undesirable corrosion can occur. Coating adhesion and the rate of disbonding are affected by surface oxide on the steel, the level of cathodic polarization, potential cycling during exposure, temperature, pH, and solution conductivity/resistivity. Wet/dry cycles and aeration greatly affect the rate of disbonding.
