The deposition of PAHs and PCDD/Fs to a fully developed corn canopy was studied. The gas and particle bound concentrations in the atmosphere were measured using a high volume sampler, and cascade and rotary impactors were employed to obtain the distribution of the contaminants among the different particle size fractions. Total (wet and dry) deposition was measured both below and outside of the canopy. Plant leaves were collected on 12 occasions during the last two months before the harvest in early October. The leaves were divided into 4 fractions for analysis: surface wash with distilled water; wash by shaking in an EDTA solution; wash by dipping in chloroform/methanol (3:1); and Soxhlet extraction of the remainder. The data give valuable insights into the mechanisms and kinetics of SOC deposition to agricultural crops.
