A new automated wet-only sampler for PCDD/F was developed using the following design criteria: Collection of detectable quantities of PCDD/F under European background conditions; all season operation; sampling intervals of at least one month without maintenance; sample conservation to avoid post-precipitation losses; immediate extraction to avoid storage and transport of water. The novel characteristics of this sampler include its size (a 60 cm x 40 cm collecting funnel), a solvent rinsing system which removes SOC from the surface of the funnel following a precipitation event, and an extraction cartridge containing a filter and XAD resin which removes particle bound and dissolved SOC from the precipitation water. A valve at the bottom of the funnel serves to divert the solvent to a storage reservoir and the precipitation water to the extraction cartridge. The sampler has been successfully operated for extended periods of {minus}20 C weather and under summer conditions in Germany. The cartridge has been shown to extract more than 90% of the PCDD/F from rain water. Preliminary testing has shown good agreement between this sampler and a conventional funnel/bottle sampler for single rain events.
