Although the commissioning of the THTR 300, the only large pebble bed High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (HTGR) power plant, occurred more than 30 years ago, many lessons could be learned that would directly benefit the design, construction and startup of future pebble bed HTGRs. This report includes a review of the THTR 300 design and an overview of the commissioning program utilized to bring the plant from initial criticality to full power. Selected plant test results are compared to predicted plant behavior from 40% to 100% plant load. Lessons learned from the commissioning of the THTR are also included. (author)
