The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Office of Superfund Remediation and Technology Innovation (OSRTI) has primary responsibility for implementing the long-term (non-emergency) portion of a key U.S. law regulating cleanup of contaminated sites: the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act, CERCLA, nicknamed 'Superfund.' The purpose of the Superfund program is to protect human health and the environment over the long term from releases or potential releases of hazardous substances from abandoned or uncontrolled hazardous waste sites. The focus of this paper is on the guidance and tools for addressing radioactively contaminated sites by the Superfund program that are most important when remediating uranium mine sites. This presentation will also discuss some of the key features of these tools that may have more utility at a uranium mine site. (authors)
