Superfund`s presumptive remedy
In response to perceived inefficiencies and ineffectiveness within the Superfund program, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) launched the Superfund Accelerated Cleanup Model (SACM). The goals of SACM include speeding up the investigate and remedial portions of the cleanup process. One of the tools EPA is using as part of the SACM is the presumptive remedy. Two presumptive remedies were published in the form of Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response (OSWER) directives. Two others released in 1994 are ``Presumptive Remedies: Site Characterization and Technology Selection for CERCLA Sites with Volatile Organic Compounds in Soil,`` and ``Presumptive Remedy for CERCLA Municipal Landfill Sites.`` Other areas addressed by presumptive remedies include wood treaters, polychlorinated biphenyls, coal gasification, grain storage and groundwater sites.
