As-received UBE-El0 silicon nitride powder was thermally and chemically treated for surface analysis. Surface characterization was performed by BET, XPS, TEM, and acoustophoresis measurement. The surface charge behavior of oxidized and leached powders was related to their surface oxygen contents. The surface morphologies and charge behaviors of powders changed after they were modified by metal-organics. The density of the coating layer was estimated and the surface area coverage of the coating was calculated. A mechanism for powder surface modification was also proposed.
