Formation of titania and silica particles by oxidation of TiCl{sub 4} and SiCl{sub 4} vapors in a methane-air diffusion flame reactor was investigated. The effects of flame configuration (fuel and oxidant flow rate and position) on the product titania and silica particle size as well as on the phase composition of titania were studied. Specifically, the titania primary particle size decreased from 102 nm to 12.5 nm and the rutile fraction was reduced from 15% to 0.1 %, while the average size of silica particles was reduced from 29 nm to 10 nm by just exchanging the position of the fuel and oxidant streams in the burner.
