Synthesis of nanosize titania powders in diffusion flame reactors
- Univ. of Cincinnati, OH (United States)
Titania particles with closely controlled size from 10 to 200 nm were made by controlling the fuel-oxidant mixing during TiCl oxidation. in general, powders with high specific surface area (100 m{sup 2}/g) had high anatase content. The effects of flame configuration (fuel and oxidant flow rate and position) as well as precursor loading on the specific surface area and phase composition of the product titania powder will be presented. Furthermore, it will be presented the unique effect of a gaseous electric discharge (corona) near the flame front on the characteristics of the particles. Charging newly formed titania particles at an early stage of their growth by coagulation and sintering results in smaller particles with lower rutile contents.
