Production of various fullerenes by an arc discharge in repetitive low-gravitational field

Conference ·
OSTI ID:226909
If fullerenes are produced by a helium arc discharge in a non-gravitational field and thermal convection of helium gas is suppressed, motion of carbon atoms in gas phase is governed by thermal diffusion in collisional system, and reaction time of carbon molecules in high temperature region becomes larger. This would result in high efficiency production of higher fullerenes and metallo-fullerenes. In order to confirm this effect, a DC arc reactor, which is forced to swing vertically, is developed and repetitive low-gravitational discharge is realized for more than 15 min, and fullerenes are produced in equivalently non-gravitational condition for more than 6 min by modulating the discharge current synchronous.
