Facility for synthesizing fullerenes in arc discharges

A facility for synthesizing fullerenes by evaporating graphite at a low helium pressure in an arc discharge with a power of {approximately}30 kW and a current of {approximately}1000 A is described. The content of C{sub 60}/C{sub 70} fullerenes in the resulting soot is about 15%. The process can be investigated and the optimal parameters can be determined by turning the synthesis parameters over a wide range.
