Decommissioning Russian type power plants in Eastern Germany -- Conceptions and experience

Conference ·
OSTI ID:225520
All WWER type nuclear power plant units operating in the former GDR were finally shut down in 1990, and their decommissioning was decided in 1990/91. From the view of the licensing procedure, the decommissioning and dismantling will be performed in several steps. The disassembly of power components will be started from inactive and low-active areas and be continued in the direction of high activity. This procedure makes it possible to gather experience in the non-active area and to disassemble high-active areas with growing experience. Most of the KGR (Greifswald) fuel elements shall be transferred by end of 1995 from the units to ZAB, the external fuel store situated on site. The rest of the fuel elements shall be stored in transport and storage casks in suitable rooms of the NPP units. The KKR (Rheinsberg) fuel elements shall be disposed in the same manner in storage casks on the KKR site. After completion of the intermediate dry fuel store to be constructed on the KGR site, all fuel elements of KGR and KKR will be transported into this store. According to present planning, the dismantling of KKR installations shall be finished by the year 2009. The corresponding limit for KGR will be by 2012.
