The NPP Rheinsberg nuclear power plant (NPP) (KKR), the first nuclear power plant of the former German Democratic Republic, was commissioned in 1966 and shut down for safety reasons in 1990. Today, the plant is in a postoperative condition. The former safety philosophy for Rheinsberg`s waste was the long-term storage of all low-and medium-active waste at the KKR site. After the reunification of Germany, a new decision was made. The KKR storage facilities, built and operated for both solid and liquid radioactive waste, now have to be removed, and waste will be stored in the final repository of Morsleben before 2000.
