Sensitized red luminescence from Mn{sup 2+}-doped Olgite-type phosphates

Bright red luminescence is observed from Mn{sup 2+}-doped olgite-type Na{sub 2}BaMgP{sub 2}O{sub 8} with the aid of Eu{sup 2+} or Ce{sup 3+} sensitizer. Under ultraviolet (UV) light, Na{sub 2}BaMgP{sub 2}O{sub 8}: Eu{sup 2+} and Na{sub 2}BaMgP{sub 2}O{sub 8}: Ce{sup 3+} exhibit intense near-UV emissions derived from 5d-4f electron transition. Since their emission bands have substantial spectral overlap with the excitation bands of Mn{sup 2+} in Na{sub 2}BaMgP{sub 2}O{sub 8}, Mn{sup 2+} emission is successfully sensitized by resonance energy transfer. Detailed spectral consideration has revealed that Eu{sup 2+} and Ce{sup 3+} occupying interlayer A-site mainly contribute to the enhancement of the Mn{sup 2+} emission. - Graphical abstract: Olgite-type red emitting phosphors, Na{sub 2}BaMgP{sub 2}O{sub 8}: Eu{sup 2+}, Mn{sup 2+} and Na{sub 2}BaMgP{sub 2}O{sub 8}: Ce{sup 3+}, Mn{sup 2+}, were prepared by solid state reaction. Under UV excitation, Mn{sup 2+}-derived red emission was observed from them only when Eu{sup 2+} or Ce{sup 3+} ions were codoped as sensitizers, indicating that the red emission was enhanced by resonant energy transfer from the sensitizer to Mn{sup 2+}. Highlights: Black-Right-Pointing-Pointer Olgite-type phosphate red phosphors were prepared by solid state reaction. Black-Right-Pointing-Pointer Emission properties of Ce{sup 3+} doped in Na{sub 2}BaMgP{sub 2}O{sub 8} were investigated. Black-Right-Pointing-Pointer Emission properties of Mn{sup 2+} doped in Na{sub 2}BaMgP{sub 2}O{sub 8} were investigated. Black-Right-Pointing-Pointer Crystallographic site occupied by Ce{sup 3+} and Mn{sup 2+} ions were spectroscopically identified. Black-Right-Pointing-Pointer Energy transfer between Eu{sup 2+} or Ce{sup 3+} and Mn{sup 2+} was investigated for Na{sub 2}BaMgP{sub 2}O{sub 8}-based phosphors.
