Troubleshooting for efficiency improvements and life extension in Kaplan type turbines
- ANNA, Inc., Annapolis, MD (United States)
The troubleshooting process applies to discovering opportunities for efficiency upgrades for Kaplan bladed turbines. Maintaining operation on its cam curve is paramount to maximizing revenue and increasing service life by reducing cavitation and resultant wear of the runner blades and draft tube. The Kaplan turbine design is the design of choice to produce the most power in low head applications. Adjustable wicket gates and runner blades give this design its high efficiency. Maintaining the proper wicket gate and runner blade relationship is required to benefit from the high efficiency design and to reduce the wear and tear of the turbine components. This allows the greatest power output for all flow occasions.
