Dinorwig Power Station, commissioned in 1983, is among the largest pumped storage power stations in Europe. It was specifically designed to meet sudden increases in electricity demand and can generate up to 1320 MW of station output within approximately 12 seconds. This paper describes the following processes: (1) The conception and development of the analytic process to confirm the feasibility of the method for supporting the valve rotor (plug) in the centre of the 1 mm bearing clearance with an applied load in excess of 3000 tonnes. (2) The utilisation of new and existing components within the limited space available. (3) Risk analysis and safety assessment. (4) The initial proving tests and the successful step by step method used on a valve during a routine outage. (5) Planning, including working party meetings, method statements, in-situ machining and staff training.
