South Holston power intake penstock rehabilitation
This paper discusses the rehabilitation of a 4.6 m (15-ft) diameter penstock adjoining a turbine inlet butterfly valve, which was ruptured as a result of a catastrophic failure of the valve. The paper includes the details of the installation and welding procedures implemented for replacing the damaged valve and penstock and for local repair of a large tear in the penstock, under highly restrained conditions. Also included is a description of the removal and rewelding of an oblong opening cut out of the concrete encased portion of the steel penstock for construction access. Discussions include the procedures used and precautions taken to assess the damage and to control distortion, residual stresses and cracking resulting from the welding process.
