In glassy polymers, failure is often preceded by polymer crazing, a process where voids are formed, separated by strands of oriented polymer called fibrils. Glassy polymers also undergo a structural recovery in which the enthalpy and volume of the glass evolve to the true equilibrium state. {open_quotes}Physical aging{close_quotes} refers to the changes in mechanical response associated with the structural recovery. It is expected that aging the polymer will impact the crazing behavior. This work investigates the critical strain for craze initiation, and the craze initiation time under equal bi-axial stress of a commercial polystyrene as a function of aging time and temperature. These experiments add to the limited database on the effect of physical aging on crazing behavior.
