Lithium triborate LiB{sub 3}O{sub 5}(LBO) is an important new UV nonlinear optical crystal discovered by Fujian Institute. It will be grown from flux system. A novel type of inclusions-negative crystal in LBO has been investigated in IR microscope for the first time. The IR reflective spectra show that the peaks at the range of 1100-850 cm{sup -1} and 1400-1200 cm{sup -1} are attributable to B-O vibration in the tetrahedral (BO{sub 4}) group and the trigonal (BO{sub 3}) group, respectively. The peaks appear in the same range as a perfect LBO crystal, but different in the width and number. At the same time, they are coincident with those of glassy LBO sample. The results reveal that the crystal exists glassy state in these negative crystal inclusions which come from the left mother liquor. In comparison with optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction topography and light scattering topograph, the IR microspectroscopy is the most advanced technology for the micro-area analysis.
