The compounds CsCu{sub 2}MTe{sub 4} (M = Nb, Ta) have been synthesized through the use of the reactive flux Cs{sub 2}Te{sub 3}. Determined through single-crystal diffraction methods, the compound CsCu{sub 2}NbTe{sub 4} crystallizes in the space group D{sub 2h}{sup 16}-Pnma of the orthorhombic system with two formula units in a cell of dimensions a = 8.198, b = 5.988, c = 20.527 {Angstrom}. The two-dimensional structure contains zig-zag layers of tetrahedrally-coordinated Cu and Nb atoms disordered over two crystallographically independent sites. Cs{sup +} ions separate the layers and are coordinated to seven Te atoms in a monocapped trigonal prismatic geometry. This structure contains layers similar to those found in KCu{sub 2}NbSe{sub 4}, but the positions of the layers relative to one another are different. Structural comparisons and electrical conductivity will be discussed.
