Aquatic humic and fulvic materials have been isolated in their natural state by using hollow-fiber ultrafilters with pore sizes of 100,000, 30,000, 10,000, and 1,000 molecular weight. The relative number of free versus bound carboxylate units was then determined for each size range by using cylindrical internal reflectance infrared techniques. Trace metal analysis was used to determine the bound species. Cylindrical internal reflectance was also used to investigate the binding and possible mobilization of silica by aquatic humic materials.
