It has been observed recently that Au/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} are promising lean NO{sub x} reduction catalysts. In this study, lean NO{sub x} reduction activity of Au/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} was examined with respect to the preparation variables, such as co-precipitation method versus deposition-precipitation method, pH in precipitation and metal loadings. Catalysts prepared by co-precipitation only reduced NO to N{sub 2}O, whereas those prepared by deposition-precipitation method were active for the reduction of NO to N{sub 2} in the presence of H{sub 2}O and high O{sub 2} partial pressure. Stability of Au catalysts was also examined under reaction conditions. A 0.9 wt% Au/Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} catalyst tested, showed surprisingly high stability. There was no sign of deactivation after over 26 h of use between 400 and 500{degrees}C.
