The objective of this study is evaluate and develop different separation and analytical techniques to characterize full range petroleum heavy oil components as a function of atmosphericQ equivalent boiling point and molecular weight. Oil components boil below 1300{degrees}F are fractionated into boiling point fractions by high vacuum short path distillation and the 1300+{degrees}F resid material including the asphaltenes is separated into molecular size cuts by gel permeation chromatography. The molecular weight, elemental composition, ramscarbon, metals, heteroatoms, acid/base contents and NMR derived structural parameters of individual fractions are analyzed. These properties will be used to illustrate the interplay of three major chemical parameters: aromaticity, polarity and molecular weight, in controlling the chemistry of asphaltenic material in oil. The utility and limitations of the different separation and analytical techniques will be discussed in detail.
